Agency One First Nations Cultural Organization is a not-for-profit created by the four Agency One First Nations - Couchiching, Mitaanjigamiing, Naicatchewenin, and Nigigoonsiminikaaning - to protect and revitalize our culture, language, ceremony, and traditional land use.

Our work is guided by Elders, Survivors, and community voices who remind us that everything begins with the land.

Our Values

Anishnaabeg assert our sovereignty by embodying our language, our culture, and our ceremonies on our Agency One lands.

Our Vision

To continue to breathe life into our history, our ways, our language, our culture, and our ceremonies - protecting our lands and waters for future generations.

Our Mission

  • Agency One First Nations Cultural Organization, to lead cultural revitalization, ceremony, language, and community engagement.

  • Agency One First Nations Lands LP, to guide future land development and economic opportunity.

Agency One lands carry the stories of generations of Anishinaabe families who lived, learned, and gathered here long before the boundaries of modern communities were drawn. These lands, located near Fort Frances, Ontario, are sacred to the four First Nations who continue to share stewardship and connection: Couchiching, Mitaanjigamiing, Naicatchewenin, and Nigigoonsiminikaaning.

In 2019, our four communities came together to sign the Agency One Land and People’s Trust - a historic agreement that affirmed our collective responsibility to protect and care for these lands, our culture, and our people. From this foundation, two new organizations were formed:

Honouring Our Shared History

In 2023, Agency One First Nations Cultural Organization became an incorporated not-for-profit under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. Our first Board of Directors was appointed and bylaws were adopted - formalizing our work as a community-driven organization dedicated to cultural renewal.

In 2024, Laureen Hill was appointed as the organization’s first Chief Executive Officer, bringing strong leadership rooted in community connection, education, and healing. Under her guidance, we established the Cultural Revitalization Advisory Committee - a circle of Elders and cultural knowledge keepers who ensure our work follows Anishinaabe ways of knowing and being.

Building the Organization

Cultural Programs & Infrastructure – Continuing cultural events and preparing for the development of a Round House and cultural centre.

Organizational Growth – Building stability through partnerships and sustainable funding.

Strong Community Foundations – Maintaining connection and open communication across all four communities.

Moving Forward Together

In 2025, the Board and CEO came together to create our first Strategic Plan, setting a clear path forward for the next three years. This plan focuses on:

“To me, healing is true connection to the spirit world - guiding people to a better way of life. Traditional ways and ceremony are a big part of that.”

Today, Agency One Cultural continues to grow through the guidance of survivors, Elders, and community members. From the Survivor Network and Culture Camp to youth initiatives and education bursaries, our work ensures that ceremony, language, and pride remain alive on Agency One lands - for generations to come.
